Class PvP guides for WoW Forever

Pick your class below. Learn how it wins, the buttons that matter, and how to beat every class you meet.

Each guide: talents, key buttons, your opener, every matchup, and your job in each battleground.

Priest

The best healer, or a terrifying Shadow caster.

Priests are the strongest healers in battlegrounds. They shield, dispel and fear melee away. Every Priest now has Fear Ward, and each race adds two extra priest spells. Shadow Priests trade healing for damage, Silence and the new Shadow Word: Death. Either way, enemies target you first.

Priest basics

What powers you

Priests use mana. Every heal, shield and attack costs mana, and enemies can drain it with Mana Burn. Drink between fights and do not waste it on heals nobody needs.

Cloth armor only. Your ranged slot is a wand, used with Shoot.

Shields

Power Word: Shield absorbs damage, and while it holds, damage cannot interrupt your casts. After a shield the target cannot be shielded again for 15 sec.

Fear and Fear Ward

Psychic Scream makes enemies within 8 yards flee for 8 sec, which buys time to heal. Damage can break it. Every Priest now gets Fear Ward at 20: it blocks the next Fear on a friend.

Dispels

Dispel Magic removes a harmful spell from a friend or a buff from an enemy. Clear Polymorph and Fear off allies, and strip enemy shields and Blessings. Cure Disease and Abolish Disease handle diseases.

Race spells

Each race gets two extra Priest spells, such as Feedback for Humans, Desperate Prayer for Dwarves or Shadowguard for Trolls. Learn what yours do.

Abilities you unlock, by level

  1. 6Power Word: Shield
Absorbs damage and protects your casts from interrupts.
  2. 14Psychic Scream
Fears nearby enemies so you can heal or run.
  3. 18Dispel Magic
Strips enemy buffs and frees allies from Polymorph and Fear.
  4. 20Fear Ward
Blocks the next Fear. Every Priest has it now.
  5. 20Flash Heal
    Your fast 1.5 sec heal.
  6. 24Mana Burn
Drains a caster's mana and hurts them.
  7. 30Mind Control
Take over an enemy. In Arathi Basin you can walk them off a cliff.
  8. 30Penance
(talent) Quick channeled heal or Holy damage on a 12 sec cooldown.
  9. 30Silence
(talent) Silences a caster for 5 sec.
  10. 32Shadow Word: Death
Instant burst. Costs you 30% of max health if the target lives.

PvP while you level

10-19

You have Power Word: Shield, Renew, Lesser Heal, Shadow Word: Pain and Mind Blast. Inner Fire at 12, Psychic Scream at 14, Heal at 16 and Dispel Magic at 18. In Warsong Gulch, stand behind your team, shield whoever is hit and Scream melee off you.

20-29

Flash Heal and Fear Ward at 20, Mana Burn at 24 and Binding Heal at 25, which heals a friend and you at once. Row 3 talents open at 20 (Holy Nova, Inner Focus or Mind Flay). Arathi Basin opens at 20: heal at a base, not in the open.

30-39

Mind Control at 30, plus Penance or Silence from row 5 talents. Shadow Word: Death at 32 and Abolish Disease at 32. Darkspear Islands opens at 30: heal the fight at the center flag.

40-49

Greater Heal at 40. Row 7 talents at 40 give Power Infusion, Prayer of Mending or Shadowform. Shadowform cuts physical damage taken by 15% but you cannot heal while in it.

50-59

Mostly new ranks of the spells you already have. Alterac Valley opens at 51: heal and dispel the push from behind your group.

60

Your kit is complete. Before a fight: Shield, Inner Fire and Fear Ward. In the fight: dispel often, Scream when melee reach you, and stay near your team, because enemies target Priests first.

Set up your bars

Keys 1-6Same as the key list above: Power Word: Shield, Psychic Scream, Dispel Magic, Fear Ward, Flash Heal, Mana Burn.
Keys 7-0 and Q/EHealers: Renew, Heal or Greater Heal, Binding Heal, and Penance or Prayer of Mending. Shadow: Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Shadow Word: Death and Silence.
Shift keysFade, your two race spells, Inner Focus or Power Infusion, and Cure Disease or Abolish Disease.
Side barBuffs and rare spells: Power Word: Fortitude, Inner Fire, Shadow Protection, Mind Control and your wand.
ControllerThe bumpers target allies and enemies, so healing works well in Gamepad mode. Fixed Party Targeting gives each D-pad direction one party member, but not in raid groups. Put Shield and Flash Heal on the trigger layer you reach fastest.

New Priest questions

Should I heal or play Shadow?

Both work. Healers are wanted in every battleground. Shadow deals more damage but cannot cast heals in Shadowform.

Why can't I shield the same person again?

After Power Word: Shield the target cannot be shielded again for 15 sec. Heal them or shield someone else.

Do all Priests get Fear Ward now?

Yes, from level 20. It blocks the next Fear on the target and lasts 3 min, on a 3 min cooldown.

Why did Shadow Word: Death hurt me?

If the target survives, you take damage equal to 30% of your max health. Use it to finish low targets.

How do I survive a Rogue?

Shield early. When their stun ends, Psychic Scream and heal while they run. Holy Nova hits enemies within 10 yards and can help against Rogues near you.

Talents and PvP builds

New to talents?

  • You get your first talent point at level 10 and one more each level. That is 51 points at level 60.
  • Every class has three trees. Each row opens once you spend 5 points per row above it in that tree.
  • A line between two talents means the lower one needs the upper one maxed first.
  • Changed your mind? Your class trainer resets your talents for a fee.
  • Pick a PvP build below. Lit icons show where its points go. Hover or tap any talent to read what it does.

Discipline Shield Healer

The healer melee cannot kill.

31Discipline20Holy0Shadow

You heal with shields, Penance and quick heals while staying hard to lock down. Shields come back faster, critical heals leave extra absorbs, and Power Infusion boosts a teammate for a kill or a save.

Best for: Battlegrounds and flag carriers

Gear

Your PvP gear path

Two sets: Shadow, and Holy/Discipline. Honor and Marks buy the gear; your rank unlocks the upgrades.

  1. Blue PvP setLevel 55. Buy each piece with Honor plus Marks from battlegrounds. No rank needed.
  2. PvP trinketRank 2. Removes slows and loss-of-control effects, 5 min cooldown. Get it first: it wins more fights than any armor.
  3. Faction cloakRank 3.
  4. Epic upgradesTurn a blue piece in with an Emboldened Seal. Wrist and waist at Rank 8, feet 9, hands 10, legs and shoulders 12, chest and head 13.
  5. Rank 14 weaponGrand Marshal or High Warlord. Earliest in week 10 of a season.

Don’t sit on Honor: you can hold 25,000 at most, and anything past that is lost. Beta prices and ranks may change.

Stats to look for

Healer: Stamina, then healing power, Intellect and Spirit. Shadow: Stamina, then spell power and Intellect. Based on the set stats.12

Forever has no Resilience. Developers said they are not adding it. Stamina gives 10 health per point, like Classic. Hit and crit are one stat each now, for spells and attacks alike. Hit cap against players of your level: 5% melee and ranged, 4% spells, 24% dual wield (beta client). A beta bug halved crit damage in PvP. Blizzard called it a bug and fixed it in the Oct 8 notes. Most damage and healing over time can crit now. Expertise is new. It lowers the target's dodge and parry chance. Every PvP set piece is Stamina-heavy. The sets are the clearest guide to what each spec should stack.

Honor and Marks, in plain words

  • Rare pieces need level 55 and no rank. You pay Honor plus Marks of Honor.
  • Each slot needs Marks from one battleground: WSG for hands, legs, wrists; AB for shoulders, chest, waist, cloaks; AV for head and two-handers; Darkspear for feet, necklace, one-handers, ranged, shields, off-hands.
  • A win gives 3 Marks, a loss 1. You can carry up to 30 of each.
  • Full rare set of 8 pieces (6 set + wrist + waist): 59,200 Honor plus Marks (35 WSG, 35 AB, 15 AV, 10 Darkspear).
  • Epic seals for 8 pieces: 14,000 Honor plus the head seal (price unknown).
  • Honor cap is 25,000, so you will visit the vendor several times.
  • Vendors: Champions' Hall in Stormwind (Captain Dirgehammer armor, Captain O'Neal weapons, Master Sergeant Biggins accessories) and Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar (Lady Palanseer, Sergeant Thunderhorn, Brave Stonehide).

Gear tips

  • Both priest sets add 1 sec to Psychic Scream (4 rare or 3 epic pieces).
  • Shadow has its own set in Forever (Raiment). Healers use Investiture.
  • Forever lets most damage and healing over time crit.

Enchants

  • All Classic Era enchants remain, so Crusader is still the melee weapon pick. Spell Power and Healing Power for casters and healers.
  • New 2H weapon: Strength (+25 Str), Mighty Spell Power (+55), Mighty Healing Power (+100 healing).
  • New 1H weapon: Recovery (heal 5% max health on parry or dodge), Revelation (next spell +100% crit, diminishing), Insight (Spirit proc).
  • New chest: Absorption (25% chance to absorb 50 damage per hit).
  • New necklace enchants: +5 Str, +5 Agi, spell power, healing power, +5 defense.
  • New bracer and cloak options include Superior Agility (+9), Superior Intellect (+9) and cloak Agility (+5).

Consumables

  • Rank 5 reward: Combat Potions (contents not detailed by Blizzard).
  • BG quartermasters sell Superior and Major Healing and Mana Draughts, bandages and rations from Friendly or Honored.
  • Minor, Lesser and plain Healing Potions moved to First Aid.
  • Alchemists get Mixology: their own elixirs and flasks last twice as long and are stronger.
  • Draught of Predatory Senses is now a potion on the shared combat potion cooldown.

Professions

  • Engineering is the most common PvP pick. Bombs and gadgets give burst and control.
  • SAF-T and EZ-Thro explosives can be used by non-engineers, so you can buy them.
  • Mining at 300 is reported to give +5% max health. Good for PvP, check on live.
  • Gnome racial no longer gives +15 Engineering. It makes devices more reliable.
  • Alchemy's Mixology helps if your battleground allows your elixirs.

Not published yet: Price of the Emboldened Head Seal (rank 13) is not published. All set stats and prices are beta data. Check the vendor on live realms. No tested PvP stat priority at level 60 yet. The beta stopped at level 30. Stats of the battleground reputation rewards in Forever are not checked here.

Racials and mistakes

Racials

Each race gets two priest spells. Alliance: Human (Divine Grace, Feedback), Dwarf (Desperate Prayer, Chastise), Night Elf (Elune's Grace, Starshards) or Gnome (Confounding Flash, Contingency Plan). Horde: Undead (Dark Sacrifice, Touch of Weakness) or Troll (Hex of Weakness, Shadowguard). Fear Ward is no longer Dwarf only. Useful normal racials: Undead Will of the Forsaken breaks Fear, Human Will to Survive breaks stuns.

Common mistakes

  • Healing from the front line.
  • Forgetting to dispel.
  • Psychic Scream into Fear Ward or Tremor Totem.

Veteran tip

Priest mirrors are common. Dispel their shield before you burn them.

How ranks work

Battlegrounds and weekly PvP quests give Rank Points. Everyone needs the same points, and nothing takes them away.

Fourteen ranks

From Private or Scout up to Grand Marshal or High Warlord. Rank 2 gives the PvP trinket; Rank 14 gives the epic weapons.

Weekly cap

The highest rank you can reach rises each week. Rank 14 opens in week 10 of a season at the earliest.
