PvP Basics

Everything a newcomer needs before the first battleground

Crowd control and diminishing returns

Crowd control (CC) means stuns, roots, fears, sheep and the like. In Forever, CC is grouped into diminishing returns (DR) groups. If you hit the same target with CC from the same group again, it lasts a shorter time. Blizzard has not published the full group list, the exact shortening, or the reset timer for Forever. 1234

Roots from talent procs

  • Frostbite
  • Entrapment
  • Improved Wing Clip
  • Counterattack
  • Improved Hamstring

Blizzard's Nov 3 notes: roots that occur from procs now correctly have diminishing returns, and lists these five. Entrapment got its DR fix on Oct 8. One fan site says these five share one DR group; Blizzard's notes do not say whether they share a group with each other or with other roots.

Other CC groups

Not published for Forever. A fan site counts about 85 to 90 class, talent and racial spells (each rank counted) in DR groups, but does not name the groups or cite a source. Do not assume the Classic groups or timers carry over.

Your PvP trinket

Greater Insignia of the Alliance / Greater Insignia of the Horde. Unlocks at Rank 2 (Corporal / Grunt). Use: removes all movement impairing effects and all effects which cause loss of control of your character. 5 minute cooldown. It is the same trinket for every class, unlike the class-specific Classic insignias.

Tips

  • Some talents shorten CC on you. Example: the Paladin talent Stoicism reduces Stun and Charm duration on you by 10/20%, and Divine Precision reduces Silence duration by 10/20% (both from the Nov 3 notes).
  • Save the trinket for a CC that will get you killed. It has a 5 minute cooldown.
  • Sap flags the Rogue for PvP when used on a flagged target (Sep 24 fix), so you cannot open on a flagged player for free.
  • Damage from Discolored Healing Potions no longer breaks CC (Oct 8). Undead Priest Dark Sacrifice no longer breaks damage-breakable CC (Nov 3).
  • Critical strikes in PvP no longer have reduced efficacy (Oct 8 notes), so crits hit players at full strength.

Positioning

Use line of sight

Casters need to see you. If a Mage or Warlock is hitting you, step behind a wall, tree, rock or building. Their cast fails and they have to move to find you.

Pillars break casts and chases

Run around a pillar or corner when you are losing. Melee chase you around it while your healer catches up. Casters lose their target every time you vanish behind it.

Casters: stay at range

Keep 20 to 30 yards from melee. Stand behind your own front line, not in front of it. If melee reach you, slow, root or step away before you keep casting.

Melee: stick to your target

Stay on your target's back. Use your gap closer and slow early so they cannot walk away. Do not swap targets every few seconds.

Stay near your healer

Healers have range limits and need line of sight to you. If you run far ahead or around a corner, you get no heals. Fight where your healer can see you.

Do not fight on the enemy graveyard

Enemies there come back to life in waves at full health and mana. Your group wears down while they reset. Pull back to a spot closer to your own side.

Take high ground

Ledges, bridges and slopes force melee to run the long way up. Casters on high ground get free time. Watch for knockbacks near edges.

Do not chase

A fleeing enemy at low health often leads you into their team. If they are past your group or near their base, let them go and get back to the objective.

Watch the minimap

Glance at it every few seconds. It shows where your team is, which bases are under attack, and gaps in your defense. Most newcomer deaths come from not seeing a group coming.

Spread out against area damage

Do not stack on top of each other. Area spells and fears hit everyone in one spot. A few yards apart is enough.

Situations: what to do first

Real moments you will hit in your first battlegrounds. Read the first step, then the rest.

You get stunned or feared in a group fight

  1. FirstDo not panic or trinket at once. Check your health and who is near you.
  2. ThenIf you are about to die or a big burst is coming, use your PvP trinket or a racial that breaks it. Otherwise wait it out and let your healer help. Once free, move toward your team.

Why: The trinket has a 5 minute cooldown. Using it on a short stun when you are safe means you have nothing left for the CC that would get you killed.

Two enemies jump you at once

  1. FirstRun toward your team or your healer, not away from them.
  2. ThenUse a slow, root or stun on the one doing more damage, and use defensive cooldowns early. Break line of sight around anything you can.

Why: You will lose a 1v2 alone. Your goal is to survive long enough for help to arrive or to turn it into a fair fight.

You are the flag carrier and get rooted

  1. FirstTell your team you are rooted and where. Ask a healer to dispel or a Paladin for Blessing of Freedom.
  2. ThenIf the enemy team is close and you would die, use your trinket. Mages can Blink out of roots. Use defensive cooldowns while you wait.

Why: Many roots are magic and can be removed by a friend for free. Save your trinket for the moment it decides the game.

The enemy healer stands behind their tank

  1. FirstDo not keep hitting the tank. Look for a way to reach or lock down the healer.
  2. ThenMelee: run around the tank to the healer. Casters: use CC on the healer (Polymorph, Fear, Psychic Scream) or interrupt their big heals. Then burst the tank or another target while the healer is out.

Why: As long as the healer is free, the tank will not die. Removing the healer for even a few seconds makes the kill possible.

An enemy Rogue opens on your healer

  1. FirstSwitch to the Rogue right away. Stun, slow or fear them off the healer.
  2. ThenCall it out so others help. Keep your damage on the Rogue until they die or run. Watch for Vanish and stay near the healer.

Why: A Rogue opener chains stuns. A healer who is stunned cannot heal themselves. Every second you wait is health they will not get back.

You are the last defender and three enemies attack

  1. FirstCall 'inc' with the number and the base name right away.
  2. ThenDo not try to win. Stay alive near the flag, run around obstacles, and hit or interrupt anyone who starts to capture. If you will die, at least make them restart the capture.

Why: Every second they spend on you is time for help to arrive. A dead defender gives them the base for free.

You are low on health and out of escapes

  1. FirstRun toward your healer or team, behind cover.
  2. ThenUse a potion, Healthstone or bandage if you have one. If nothing helps, stay alive as long as you can around obstacles instead of attacking.

Why: Fleeing to your team turns their chase into a fight on your terms. Running alone into the open only makes you an easy kill.

Your team is losing the fight at mid

  1. FirstStop pushing forward. Pull back toward your side or a base you hold.
  2. ThenRegroup with your healers, wait for players coming back from the graveyard, and fight together where the enemy has to come to you.

Why: Fighting in small groups feeds the enemy kills and Honor. A regrouped team at full strength can win the next fight.

A Mage keeps polymorphing your healer

  1. FirstGet on the Mage and stay on them. Interrupt, stun or slow them.
  2. ThenIf you can, have a Priest or Paladin dispel the Polymorph. Shamans can drop Grounding Totem near the healer to soak the next one.

Why: Polymorph has a cast time, so pressure and interrupts stop it. A Mage under attack spends their time saving themselves, not locking your healer.

You are ganked while questing on a PvP realm

  1. FirstIf you cannot win, do not waste cooldowns. Decide fast whether to fight or flee.
  2. ThenIf you die, wait a little before you resurrect, or res at the spirit healer away from them. Move to another quest area or ask friends or guildmates for help.

Why: Gankers want easy kills. If you keep coming back to the same spot alone, you feed them. Changing your spot or bringing help ends it.

You run out of mana as a healer

  1. FirstTell your team you are OOM.
  2. ThenStep back behind cover and drink if the fight allows it. Use mana potions, and ask a Druid for Innervate if you have one. Use cheap heals until you recover.

Why: Your team plays differently if they know heals are stopping. A healer who goes silent and dies OOM loses the whole fight.

You see the enemy flag carrier run past

  1. FirstCall it: 'EFC' plus where they are and where they are going.
  2. ThenSlow or root the carrier. Do not hit only the carrier if a healer is keeping them up. CC or kill the healer too.

Why: A slowed carrier lets your whole team catch up. A call lets players across the map help instead of guessing.

You are feared into a group of enemies

  1. FirstBreak the fear if you can: trinket, Will of the Forsaken, Berserker Rage, or ask a Shaman for Tremor Totem.
  2. ThenMove back toward your team right away and use defensive cooldowns.

Why: Fears are dangerous because of where they send you. Getting out of the enemy group matters more than the fear itself.

Your base is taken while you are away

  1. FirstDo not run back alone into a group of attackers.
  2. ThenCheck how many are there. Gather a few teammates and retake it together, or go take a weaker enemy base instead.

Why: One player against a group dies and waits at the graveyard. A small group or a trade of bases keeps the score close.

A Hunter keeps you at range

  1. FirstClose the distance with your gap closer or move behind cover so they must come to you.
  2. ThenWatch the ground for traps before you run in. Get in close and stay there.

Why: Hunters are strongest at range and traps work in combat in Forever. Breaking line of sight forces them to come close, where you are stronger.

Enemies are camping your graveyard

  1. FirstDo not res and fight one by one.
  2. ThenWait for the next wave so several of you come back together, then move off or fight as a group. If it is hopeless, go to an objective instead.

Why: Coming back alone into a group gives them free kills. A grouped wave can push them off or slip past them.

You join a battleground already in progress

  1. FirstOpen the map and the scoreboard. See which bases or flags each side holds.
  2. ThenRead chat for the plan, then go where your team is weakest or where the next fight is.

Why: Running straight to the nearest enemy wastes time. A minute of looking tells you where you are most useful.

An enemy healer is in a big group and you cannot reach them

  1. FirstPick the closest enemy your team is already hitting.
  2. ThenUse interrupts and CC on the healer from range if you have them. Wait for the healer to run low on mana or get caught out of position.

Why: Diving deep into a group alone gets you killed. Steady pressure plus a chance to catch the healer wins more fights.

You are about to die and a Paladin or Mage is next to you

  1. FirstExpect them to use Divine Shield or Ice Block, if they have it.
  2. ThenWhen they go immune, switch to another target or use the time to heal and reset. Do not waste cooldowns on an immune target.

Why: Immunity lasts about 10 seconds. Hitting it does nothing, so spend those seconds on something useful.

Battleground roles

Healer

Do

  • Stand behind your team, near cover you can step behind.
  • Heal the player under the most pressure, and save quick heals for emergencies.
  • Dispel roots, fears and slows on teammates, especially the flag carrier.
  • Call out OOM before it happens, and drink when the fight pauses.
  • Ask for a peel in chat or voice when melee jump you.

Don’t

  • Run in front of the fight. Enemies kill healers first.
  • Stand in the open while you cast. Use walls and pillars.
  • Try to heal everyone at once. Pick who matters most.

Flag carrier

Do

  • Pick a tough class with ways to escape or survive, or a strong runner.
  • Take the planned route home and stay with your escorts and healer.
  • Use your defensive cooldowns early, not at 5% health.
  • Tell the team your health and where you are.
  • Wait in your base if your flag is not home yet. Do not run off alone.

Don’t

  • Run ahead of your healers into the open.
  • Pick fights on the way home. Your job is to stay alive.
  • Leave your base to chase kills while you hold the flag.

Flag escort

Do

  • Stay near the flag carrier, not near the fight.
  • CC and slow anyone who reaches the carrier.
  • Kill or lock down enemy healers who come for the carrier.
  • Watch for stealth Rogues and Druids along the route.

Don’t

  • Chase kills away from the carrier.
  • Tunnel the enemy tank while their damage dealers hit your carrier.

Base defender

Do

  • Stand on or near the flag or node so you can stop a capture.
  • Call 'inc' early with the number of enemies, before they arrive.
  • Interrupt or hit anyone who starts to capture.
  • Stay alive. A living defender stalls attackers until help comes.
  • Check for stealth classes even when it is quiet.

Don’t

  • Leave to join a fight you can see from the base.
  • Stand far away where you cannot reach the flag in time.
  • Stay silent while you die. One call can save the base.

Damage dealer

Do

  • Hit the target your team is focusing.
  • Go after enemy healers first when you can reach them.
  • Use your interrupts on heals and big casts.
  • Peel enemies off your healer and flag carrier.
  • Play the objective. A capped base beats a kill.

Don’t

  • Chase kills across the map away from the objective.
  • Spread your damage over five targets so nobody dies.
  • Fight on the enemy graveyard.

Scout / caller

Do

  • Watch a key spot and report enemy numbers and direction.
  • Use short calls: what, where, how many. 'EFC west tunnel, 2 healers.'
  • Tell the team when an attack is a fake and the real push is elsewhere.
  • Keep the minimap and map open often.

Don’t

  • Spam chat or argue. People stop reading.
  • Give calls you have not seen yourself.
  • Join every fight. Your eyes are worth more than your damage.

UI and keybinds

Move with WASD and steer the camera with the right mouse button held down. Never click spells on your bar and never turn with A and D as keys: keyboard turners are slow and easy to catch. Put the spells you press most on keys your left hand reaches without lifting off WASD. Forever has a Quick Keybind mode: hover a bar slot and press a key to bind it. 5

KeyPut hereWhy
W A S DMove forward, strafe left, back, strafe right. Set A and D to strafe, not turn.Strafing keeps you moving while the mouse turns you. Turning with keys is slow and leaves you open.

SpaceJump.Jumping while turning keeps you moving and is used to clear small obstacles.
  • Bind every spell you use in PvP. Clicking a spell on the bar is too slow.
  • Keep the same key for the same job on every character you play, for example interrupt always on Q.
  • Use Quick Keybind mode in the Keybinds menu: hover a slot and press the key.
  • Bind the Ping command to call targets in battlegrounds.
  • Practice your binds on a target dummy or while questing before you queue.

Settings to change

Options > Nameplates: show enemy nameplates.

You see every enemy and their health over their head in big fights. 56

Options > Nameplates: show enemy cast bars on nameplates (adjust in the preview).

You see who is casting, so you know when to interrupt. 6

Options > Combat: turn on Target of Target (off by default).

Shows who your target is attacking, so you know if a healer or friend needs help. 56

Keybinds: set Tab to target nearest enemy player, not any enemy.

Stops Tab from picking pets and summons instead of real players.

Combat: turn on Unit Frame Mouseover Cast.

Lets you cast on a party frame you hover without changing target. Shown in Blizzard's modern Combat options; not tested in Forever. 7

Esc > Edit Mode: place your target, focus and cast bar frames near the center of the screen.

Your eyes stay on the fight. Edit Mode moves and resizes frames without addons. 68

Options: turn on the Cooldown Manager (search Options for it).

Shows your own cooldowns built in. Covers some of what aura addons used to do. 568

Options: Enable Damage Meter (search 'damage'), then place it in Edit Mode.

Built-in meter. You do not need a meter addon. 56

Auto attack plus strike Warrior

#showtooltip Heroic Strike
/startattack
/cast Heroic Strike

Makes sure auto attack is on when you hit. 9

Set focus All

/focus

Bind this to set your current target as focus, for example the enemy healer or flag carrier. 910

Addons

Yes. Addons that change the interface are allowed, but Forever uses modern API limits: addons cannot read the combat log, and enemy auras and crowd control on you are hidden from addons during matches. Classic Era addons need a Forever build (interface 16001 for game version 1.60.1 at launch). Blizzard has no approved list; addons must be free with readable code. Developers said they will restrict addons that automate communication or marking.

Forever Simple DR Shows crowd control diminishing returns on your target, focus and enemy nameplates. Built for Forever 1.60.1, updated Nov 3, 2026. Only counts CC you and your pet cast. 10
DRPulse Light diminishing returns tracker on nameplates, target and focus. Marked for the Forever flavor (v2.0.0, Oct 17, 2026). 11
Plater Customizable nameplates. Has a Forever version (Oct 28, 2026). 8
Bartender4 Action bar layout and paging. Has a Forever version. Edit Mode already moves bars without it. 8
ElvUI Full interface replacement. Initial Forever support in 16.00. Download from Tukui, not CurseForge. 8
Details! Damage meter. Has a Forever version, but Forever has a built-in meter. 8

Controller setup

Confirmed: Forever has native controller support, labeled Gamepad (Alpha) in the game options. Blizzard added class flyouts (Druid forms, Hunter and Warlock pets, Paladin auras, Warrior stances), a Compact Action Bar option, Fixed Party Targeting, and options to swap targeting sides. Switching to gamepad mode changes the UI and uses radial menus. The bumpers target allies and enemies; the triggers are modifiers for your action buttons. Reported limits from beta: native gamepad binds are fixed (rebinding in Keybinds only changes keyboard), plain A/B/X/Y are locked to basic actions, ground-target spells cannot be aimed freely, and turning the gamepad UI on resets your Edit Mode layout. Steam Deck and Linux are not officially supported. ConsolePort has not announced Forever support and is untested. 121314151617

Set it up

  1. Plug in or pair your controller before starting the game.
  2. Open Options and find the Gamepad (Alpha) section.
  3. Turn on the gamepad interface. The UI switches to gamepad bars and radial menus.
  4. Redo Edit Mode after turning it on, since the toggle resets your layout.
  5. Turn on Fixed Party Targeting if you want each D-pad direction to target one set party member (not in raids).
  6. Try Swap Target Modifier Sides if you would rather have enemy targeting on the left.
  7. Turn on Use Compact Action Bar if the full gamepad bars cover too much screen.
  8. Open your spellbook and drag spells into the gamepad bar slots. The slot decides the button, since gamepad binds are fixed.
  9. Keep a keyboard nearby for chat and setup.

Tips

  • Use the enemy target bumper often. Tap it to cycle and hold it to choose the exact player, such as the flag carrier.
  • Healers: practice targeting yourself. Beta testers found this the hardest part in busy fights.
  • Ground spells land around your target. You cannot aim them by hand yet.
  • Gyro aiming or Steam Input can help with the camera, but these are community workarounds.
  • On Steam Deck, play through Steam Input with the trackpad as a mouse for menus. Blizzard does not support Linux or Proton.
  • Bind a push-to-talk or keep a keyboard for battleground chat.

World PvP and realm rules

PvP realms

Forever has no realms. You pick a ruleset. On PvP (and Roleplay PvP), Blizzard says you are almost always at risk of being attacked by the other faction. You can only make characters on one faction there. Beta guides say you are flagged automatically in contested and enemy zones.

Normal realms

On Normal (and Roleplaying), PvP is at your own discretion. You fight other players only if you choose to: flag yourself (beta guides say /pvp or the portrait menu), duel, or join a battleground. Both factions are allowed.

Hardcore

Hardcore is one life per character and arrives sometime after launch, not on Nov 4. It is its own closed ecosystem. Hardcore players are not mixed into battlegrounds with other rulesets. A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. PvP Legacy challenges cannot be done on Hardcore. Hardcore flagging and duel rules are not published.

Faction balance

Blizzard says faction balance on the PvP rulesets is an important consideration. It plans systems like Season of Discovery, where new character creation can be limited for one faction for a while. Exact thresholds are not published. Beta players saw creation locked to the smaller faction in early October.

When you are flagged

  • PvP and RP-PvP: auto-flagged in contested and enemy zones (beta guide reports; Blizzard has not published the zone list or exact rules).
  • Normal and Roleplaying: opt in with /pvp or the portrait menu. Attacking or healing a flagged player flags you too (beta guide reports).
  • How long the flag lasts after combat is not published for Forever.
  • Blizzard fixed Sap so it now flags the Rogue when used on a flagged target (Sep 24).
  • Battlegrounds mix players from Normal, PvP and Roleplaying rulesets, so your ruleset does not limit battleground play.

Kills and honor

  • Blizzard confirms defeating other players earns Honor. Amounts per kill are not published. Conquest Capped saw 1 Honor for a kill on a low-ranked player in beta.
  • Rank Points come from battlegrounds and PvP quests per Blizzard. Blizzard does not list world kills as a Rank Point source.
  • The level range for an honorable kill and whether gray (much lower level) players give anything are not published for Forever.
  • Dishonorable kills (killing civilian NPCs) are not confirmed or denied by Blizzard for Forever. Players asked Blizzard to remove them in a Sep 2026 forum thread; no Blizzard reply was found.

Your weekly checklist

Rank goes up by Rank Points, and ranks have a weekly cap (Blizzard confirmed). Honor is a separate currency for gear. Rank 14 cannot be reached before week 10. 421920252627

Ticks are saved in this browser only and clear each week.

Leveling brackets

You can queue at level 10. Each battleground opens at its own level. Below 60, brackets are ten levels wide (10-19, 20-29 and so on), and level 60 is its own bracket. Blizzard has not published Forever's brackets; this comes from the beta client. 2519

Glossary

AFK
Away from keyboard. In battlegrounds, a player who joined but is not playing. They can be reported.
Assist
Target what a teammate is targeting so everyone hits the same enemy.
Bait
Trick an enemy into using a cooldown or chasing you into a trap.
Burst
A lot of damage in a short window, often by stacking cooldowns on one target.
Call to Arms
The featured battleground of the week. It changes weekly and gives extra rewards.
Cap
Capture. Taking a flag home or taking over a base or node.
CC
Crowd control. Any effect that stops a player from acting or moving: stuns, fears, polymorph, roots, and so on.
Cooldowns / CDs
Strong abilities with a long recharge. Saying someone 'used their cooldowns' means they are weaker for a while.
Dispel
Removing a magic effect. Used on friends to clear harmful spells like roots and fears, or on enemies to strip buffs.
DK
Dishonorable kill. Killing a civilian NPC of the other faction. Avoid them.
DR
Diminishing returns. The same kind of CC gets shorter each time it hits the same target in a short window, then the target is immune for a while.
Drink
Sitting to drink and regain mana. Healers call it out so the team protects them or plays safe for a few seconds.
EFC
Enemy flag carrier. The player holding your flag.
FC
Flag carrier. The player holding the flag in Warsong Gulch or the center flag in Darkspear Islands.
Fear
CC that makes you run around out of control. Damage may break it. Examples: Fear, Psychic Scream, Intimidating Shout.
Focus
The one enemy the team should attack together. Also a game feature that tracks a second target.
Full cap / 5 cap
Holding every node on the map. Strong, but often leaves each base thinly defended.
Ganking
Attacking a player who is weaker, lower level or already busy, often out in the world.
GY
Graveyard. Where you come back to life after dying in a battleground.
GY camping
Waiting at the enemy graveyard to kill players as they come back. Usually a bad trade for the campers.
Healer first
The common rule to kill or lock down enemy healers before anyone else.
HK
Honorable kill. Helping kill an enemy player who is not too low level for you. Gives Honor.
Honor
The currency you earn from PvP. In Forever it buys PvP gear. You can hold up to 25,000.
Inc
Incoming. Enemies are on the way. Good calls say where and how many, like 'inc farm 5'.
Interrupt / Kick
Stops a spell mid-cast and locks that school of magic for a few seconds. Kick is the Rogue version, but players say kick for any interrupt.
Kite
Keep an enemy slowed or rooted and stay out of their reach while you hit them from range.
LoS
Line of sight. Casters need to see you to cast. Breaking LoS (hiding behind a wall or pillar) stops their casts.
Marks of Honor
Tokens from each battleground. Rare PvP gear costs Honor plus Marks.
Mid
The middle of the map. In Warsong Gulch, the open field between the two bases. In other maps, the central point.
Node / Base
A point you capture and hold, like the Stables in Arathi Basin or the capture points in Darkspear Islands.
OOM
Out of mana. A healer saying OOM means healing is about to stop.
Opener
The first move from stealth, like Cheap Shot or Ambush. Usually starts a burst.
Peel
Get an attacker off a teammate, usually with CC, a slow or a stun.
Pocket healer
A healer who sticks to one player, often the flag carrier.
Premade
A group that joined the battleground together, usually on voice chat.
Pug
Pick-up group. Random players put together by the queue.
Purge
Removing a buff from an enemy. Also the name of the Shaman spell that does it.
Rank / Rank Points
Your PvP rank from 1 to 14. Rank Points climb it, with a weekly cap. Rank 14 is reachable in week 10 at the earliest.
Res timer
Spirit healers bring dead players back in waves on a timer, not one by one. Fighting near a graveyard means enemies keep coming back.
Rez / Res
Bring a dead player back to life, with a spell or at the spirit healer.
Root
You cannot move, but you can still cast and attack. Examples: Entangling Roots, Frost Nova.
Sheep / Poly
Polymorph, the Mage spell that turns a target into a harmless animal (a turtle by default in Forever). Any damage breaks it. Players still call it a sheep.
Silence
You cannot cast spells for a short time. You can still move and use physical attacks.
Snare
A slow on your movement speed. Examples: Hamstring, Frost Shock, Crippling Poison.
Stealthie
A Rogue in Stealth or a Druid in Prowl. Calls like 'rogue at base' warn the team.
Stun
CC that stops all actions. Examples: Cheap Shot, Kidney Shot, Hammer of Justice.
Train
Several players all chasing and hitting one target.
Trinket
